Remember a few years ago when “YOLO” was the big thing? For those of you who don’t know, Y.O.L.O. stands for “you only live once”, and back when I was in college YOLO was the mantra everyone lived by.
Wanted to go out but still had homework to finish and an 8:00 class the next morning? YOLO. Wanted to buy an expensive new outfit to wear to a formal but couldn’t rationalize it because you had 55 other ones just like it in your closet? YOLO. Wanted to eat ice cream for dinner and cookies for dessert? YOLO. YOLO became the way we rationalized every non-sensible act we made. By bringing to light the finite nature of life, we were able to feel okay about these dumb decisions because they brought us immediate joy, whether the joy would last past that second depended on what the case was. YOLO served as a comfort for many and a scapegoat for most.
Now, the term has since lost steam and you don’t hear people saying it quite as often. But this past week I’ve caught myself say it so many dang times and speaking with co-workers, a few others had noticed the same thing about themselves. So being Shelby, I really couldn’t stop thinking about YOLO today.
The reality is, it’s true- you do only live once, and that is something that I think about so often. I pretty much live my life exhausted because on top of my extra long work hours, I try to lead a social life during the week, and I don’t tend to say no to anything going on on the weekends. The non-stop way that I live my life is all thanks to the belief of YOLO being ingrained in my mind and impacting every decision that I make, whether I realize it or not. The difference between then (in college) and now is that while I still rationalize getting 3-5 Icees a week with “YOLO”, the decisions that YOLO inspires for me now are more permanent, more real. I’ve let YOLO inspire me to move to a new city, to establish a consistent workout routine, to seize every opportunity to learn and explore, to travel to new cities and countries. I’ve let YOLO go from being a scapegoat for my dumb behaviors to the fuel behind some of my most monumental life-altering decisions.
YOLO- you only live once. Is your life as you’re currently living it anything like the one life that you want to live? Are you satisfied thus far with the way you’ve carried yourself and the legacy you’d leave behind if God-forbid something happened to you tomorrow? Do you seize every single day with zest and love?
Let YOLO inspire you to be the best, most lovable, most fun, most incredible you that you can be, so that your one life is lived to its absolute fullest.
You Only Live Once, So…
Thanks for stopping by today guys! I hope you have a great week, and don’t you ever forget, YOLO.
