“Practice Makes Perfect”, right? Haven’t we all heard this fifty-two thousand times throughout our lives. Well, this should come as a surprise to no one, but I’ve been doing A LOT of reflecting lately 😉 reflecting on my relationships, my career, my goals, etc. and I’ve realized that something I don’t do is practice in these areas. Let me explain…
According to my good friend Merriam-Webster, “to practice- v. to perform an activity or exercise a skill repeatedly or regularly in order to improve or maintain one’s proficiency”
“To improve or maintain” proficiency- so if I’m willing to practice for an interview for hours on end or practice the “floss” dance with one of my twelve- year- old patients (to convince him that I’m cool), why do I push aside the art of practice in the areas of my life that truly matter? Why don’t I actively practice the traits required to make me the best daughter, friend, sister, Occupational Therapist, roommate, Catholic- that I can be?
I find myself expecting my goals to be reached. I expect to challenge myself and to find the light at the end of the tunnel because of hard work and an incredible support system. However, there are small choices that I can make everyday to foster growth in myself in these desired areas if I please, aka- there is daily practice that I can do. SO, I’m going to challenge myself to be a better *insert name of role here 🙂 * by taking steps everyday to practice being more honest, more loyal, a more effective communicator, more respectful, etc. and then I will work to transfer these gained skills to every area of my life. I’m going to practice being the best Shelby that I can be until I become just that person.
…and, I challenge YOU to join me in this by picking one trait to truly practice this week. I’m going to practice being more thoughtful in word and action. What are you going to do? I mean, as Hannah Montana told us, “Nobody’s Perfect” so I’m sure there’s something we can all work on!
Have an AWESOME week my friends! We’re halfway through July (YIKES!) so keep working to reach your summer goals for yourself- I know you can do it! ❤
